The Scarlet Knights began the weekend by defeating New Hampshire on Friday, Sept. 13, 3-1 (23-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-18). Leading the way for RU was Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA), who posted a season-high 27 kills and 25 digs. Senior Lauren Venarchik (West Chester, PA) added 12 digs, while senior co-captain Pualani Tuyay (San Diego, CA) had 58 assists.
Against St. Peter’s, freshman Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) tallied 15 kills and six digs to lead the sweep, 30-24, 30-14, 30-17. Venarchik had 11 kills and four block assists, while Bush added 10 kills and nine digs.
The Scarlet Knights were able to defeat the host Owls in five closely-contested games, 28-30, 37-35, 25-30, 33-31 and 15-13. Bush again earned a 20-kill and 20-dig effort against Temple, with 23 kills and 20 digs. Stout posted 23 kills to record a career high. She also added 11 digs for the double-double. Venarchik had 10 digs and six block assists, while Tuyay contributed 64 assists, 10 digs and six block assists. Sophomore Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) had a season-best 24 digs, and junior Sandra Nunner (Muenster, Germany) had 12 digs.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action next weekend, taking on Duke, Campbell and North Carolina on the road. RU will face the Blue Devils in Durham on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 21, Rutgers will play both Campbell and the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill. The Campbell match will be at noon, with the UNC match taking place at 7:00 p.m.
