  • NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rutgers University volleyball team (3-7) bounced back from its five-game skid in dramatic fashion with a 3-1 (31-29, 19-30, 30-26, 33-31) victory against Temple (4-7) at the Embassy Suites Classic on Friday, Sept. 16, at the College Avenue Gymnasium. The Scarlet Knights previously suffered a 3-0 loss to the Owls in their first meeting on Aug. 25.

Rutgers had five players record double figures, including junior Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ), senior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) and freshman Kyra Thompson (Tucson, AZ), who each posted double-doubles. Yankauskas led the offense with 19 kills and 12 digs, followed by Stout with 16 kills and 15 digs, while Thompson added 10 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Roxy Calder (Oceanside, CA) also chipped in a team-high 46 assists.

The Scarlet Knights were as balanced on defense as they were on offense with six players registering at least one block-assist. Senior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) led with eight block-assists, followed by Yankauskas with seven and sophomore Amanda Meyer (Naperville, IL) tied her career high with five. Junior Jocelyn Greenwald (Old Tappan, NJ) tallied a team-leading 16 digs to help bolster RU’s defensive effort.

“This win serves as a good measuring stick for how we have progressed,” said interim head coach Orlando Gonzalez. “You rarely get to play a team so early in the season and then face them again a few weeks later, so this win is a testament to this team’s incredible work ethic and it shows how far they have come along.”

In the tournament’s opening match, Fairfield defeated UMBC by a score of 3-2 (30-19, 22-30, 33-31, 27-30, 15-9). Lindsey Lee led the Stags, posting a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs. Kelly Oliver followed with 12 kills, while on Jazmin Pa’akaula had a team-high 13 digs. For the Retrievers, Angela Anderson recorded a match-high 28 kills and Christine Skala led the defense with 26 digs.

Tournament play will continue on Saturday, Sept. 17, as Temple takes on Fairfield at 10:00 a.m., while Rutgers will do battle against UMBC at 12:30 p.m. The Owls will return to go up against UMBC at 3:00 p.m., and Rutgers will face Fairfield in the final match of the day at 5:30 p.m.
