LAS VEGAS, NV – The Rutgers University volleyball team (2-5) fell in its only match on the first day of competition at the UNLV Classic in Las Vegas, NV, on Friday, Sept. 9. The Scarlet Knights lost by a score of 3-1 (22-30, 36-38, 30-28, 30-32) to No. 22 Long Beach State.
Rutgers battled back from a two game deficit to take the match’s third set, before eventually being outscored in the fourth and deciding game.
The Scarlet Knights were led on offense by junior Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) with 22 kills, followed by seniors Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) and Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman Roxy Calder (Vista, CA) posted team highs with 48 assists and 14 digs.
On defense, RU out-blocked the 49ers 14-9, as Young posted a match-high eight block assists. Stout followed with six block assists, while Yankauskas and sophomore Amanda Meyer (Naperville, IL) added four apiece. Freshman Kyra Thompson (Tucson, AZ) registered 13 digs to help gear the Scarlet Knight defense.
Rutgers will return to action to take on host UNLV at 11:00 a.m. and Illinois at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
