VILLANOVA, PA - The Rutgers volleyball team (16-10, 4-6 BIG EAST) closed out the season with a 3-1 (30-26, 31-29, 27-30 and 31-29) victory against Villanova (9-18, 3-7 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Nov. 14, in Villanova, PA.
Sophomore Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) enjoyed a career day, as she registered career highs in kills and digs with 29 and 16, respectively. Senior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) was second on the team with 11 kills and senior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) tallied a match-high 53 assists.
Defensively, the Scarlet Knights were outstanding as they out blocked the Wildcats 18 to seven. Senior Addie Thiry (Louisville, KY) led the team with a match-high 10 block assists, followed by senior Stephanie Travioli (Arlington, TX) and junior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) with seven apiece. Christjaener recorded a team-high 22 digs, while junior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) chipped in 19 digs to help bolster the team’s strong defensive play.
Rutgers concluded the 2004 season with a 16-10 overall record and a 4-6 mark in conference action. Highlights of the Scarlet Knights’ season included a nine-match road win streak, an upset victory over the first-place Pittsburgh Panthers and head coach Ann Leonard-House’s 350th career victory.
