  • NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rutgers volleyball team (14-9, 2-5 BIG EAST) snapped its three-match losing streak in outstanding fashion, handing first-place Pittsburgh its first loss in BIG EAST action on Friday, Nov. 5, at the College Avenue Gymnasium. The match scores were 30-26, 22-30, 30-25, 21-30 and 15-13.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 2-1 lead behind the hot hands of sophomore Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) and senior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA), who tallied 22 and 21 kills, respectively. Senior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) helped bolster the offensive attack with a team-high 53 assists

“We played together as a team and we were on,” said Christjaener. “There were no individuals, it was a great team effort.”

Rutgers put together a strong defensive effort, holding the Panthers to a .075 hitting percentage in the first game and .281 for the match. Leading the Scarlet Knights was senior Addie Thiry (Louisville, KY), who recorded a career-high 11 block assists, followed by Yankauskas with six. Christjaener led the team with 15 digs, while junior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) added 14 digs to help pace the team on defense.

“It was a huge win,” said head coach Ann Leonard-House. “We’ve been focusing on just competing and not worrying about the outcome and that worked for us today. When opportunities come, you have to take them.”

Rutgers will look to add to its momentum when it takes on the West Virginia Mountaineers on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 2:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will honor their five graduating seniors prior to the match.
