Rutgers Volleyball Defeats Villanova 3-2 on Final Day of BIG EAST Challenge

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers volleyball team (11-4) concluded play at the BIG EAST Challenge with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Villanova (4-8), (26-30, 30-21, 25-30, 30-26, 15-13). In the championship round Boston College (11-7) defeated Connecticut (7-6) 3-2, (21-30, 23-30, 32-30, 30-28, 15-7) to win the BIG EAST Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Rutgers College Avenue Gymnasium.

    In the consolation match between Rutgers and Villanova, sophomore Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) led RU with a team-high 18 kills, followed by senior Stephanie Travioli (Arlington, TX) and junior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) with 14 apiece. Senior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) again led the team with a match-high 59 assists.

    Young also had an outstanding day on the defensive side, recording a career-high 11 block assists, while junior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) registered a match-high 15 digs, followed by Travioli with 14.

    In the championship match between Boston College and Connecticut, sophomore Dorota Niemczewska led the Eagles with a match-high 22 kills, followed by senior Katie Andersen and sophomore Alison Shepp with 14 apiece. Sophomore Allison Anderson recorded a match-high 24 digs.

    For her efforts, Yankauskas was selected to the BIG EAST Challenge All-Tournament Team.

    The Scarlet Knights will return to action against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2:00 p.m.
