Women's Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Boston College in BIG EAST Challenge

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers volleyball team (10-4) got out to an early 1-0 lead but Boston College (10-7) took the next three games on its way to a 3-1 victory (26-30, 30-16, 30-26, 30-28) over the Scarlet Knights on the first day of competition at the BIG EAST Challenge. In the first match of the day, Connecticut (8-5) defeated Villanova (4-7) 3-1, (30-25, 30-17, 22-30, 30-14).

    In RU’s match against Boston College, senior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) and sophomore Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) led the way with 18 kills apiece, followed by senior Addie Thiry (Louisville, KY) who added nine kills of her own. Senior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) once again led the Scarlet Knights with a team-high 52 assists.

    On the defensive side, Christjaener and junior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) each provided RU with a team-high 10 digs. Thiry registered a match-high five block assists, while Yankauskas added four block assists.

    In the first match of the day between Connecticut and Villanova, senior Jamie Hadnefeldt led the Huskies with a match-high 19 kills and 15 digs, followed by freshman Sade Chambers and junior Megan Crawley, who both recorded 11 kills. Freshman Brittany Stewart registered a team-high 17 digs.

    Although the participating teams are BIG EAST members, the results of these contests will not count toward the individual teams’ BIG EAST regular-season records.

    The BIG EAST Challenge will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 1 when Rutgers will face off against Villanova at 1:00 p.m., followed by Connecticut and Boston College at 4:00 p.m.
