Each of the three games were very tight, with Rutgers edging the Hoyas 30-27 in the first two games. The third and final game went back and forth until an error by the Hoyas gave the Scarlet Knights a 30-26 win. In the deciding game, Rutgers took a 19-13 lead, but Georgetown came back and cut the lead to 23-21. However, Rutgers was able to gain the win with the help of two Lauren Venarchik (West Chester, PA) kills among the final points scored.
Rutgers was led by junior outside hitter Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA), who recorded 22 kills at a .417 hitting percentage and 22 digs to record her 18th double-double of the season. In the third game, Bush had five kills to lead the team. With 22 kills, Bush moves into second place on the Rutgers single-season list for kills, with 462 in 2002. With 11 more, she’ll pass Lola Opadiran’s 1997 total of 472.
Senior co-captain Pualani Tuyay (San Diego, CA) contributed 42 assists in the match, while adding 13 digs and four kills. Junior Sandra Nunner (Muenster, Germany) contributed 13 kills at a .500 hitting percentage, and sophomore Stephanie Travioli (Arlington, TX) added 12 digs and nine kills.
Georgetown was led by Lauren Warner, who posted 18 kills and 22 digs.
The Scarlet Knights will conclude the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 17, against the Villanova Wildcats. It will be Senior Day, as Tuyay, Venarchik and Jen Hansen (Bakersfield, CA) will be playing their final home match at the College Avenue Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
