  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers senior middle hitter Lauren Venarchik (West Chester, PA) has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Oct. 28.

The senior led Rutgers to two conference victories last weekend, as RU improved its record to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in league play this season. Rutgers defeated Boston College, 3-1 (19-30, 30-28, 31-29 and 30-15) on Friday, Oct. 25, then went to Providence and won, 3-1 (30-10, 22-30, 30-17 and 30-17) on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Against the Eagles, Venarchik recorded 12 kills at a hitting percentage of .455, while adding three digs and six total blocks (two solo, four assists). She followed that with 15 kills against the Friars at a .500 hitting percentage, along with four digs and eight total blocks (three solo, five assists). With her five block solos over the weekend, Venarchik moved into fourth place on the Rutgers all-time block solos list with 77. She also moved into a tie for fourth place on the all-time total blocks list with 248. Venarchik is also ranked in total blocks, as she has accumulated 325 so far in her career, the fourth-most in Rutgers’ history.

Through 22 matches this season, Venarchik is leading the team with an average of 1.21 blocks per game and a .355 hitting percentage. She is also third on the team with an average of 2.78 kills per game. In BIG EAST matches, Venarchik is second in the conference with a .408 hitting percentage, and is eighth in blocks per game with 1.32 per game.

Venarchik is the second Scarlet Knights to earn a weekly award from the BIG EAST Conference this season, as junior transfer Sandra Nunner (Muenster, Germany) has been named Rookie of the Week on two occasions.

The Scarlet Knights will return to action this weekend with two home contests. The squad will face Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m., and then take on West Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m.
