  • COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (August 30, 2014) – The Rutgers volleyball team captured its first win of the season with a five-set victory over SIUE (25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11) on Friday night at the Falcon Classic. The Scarlet Knights split the first day of the tournament 1-1.

“It’s great to get the first win of the season. I was happy to see the team’s chemistry come together tonight. We executed at a high level and it was an overall effort of great team play and teamwork. It took everyone tonight to fill their roles to get the win,” said head coach CJ Werneke.

Three Scarlet Knights recorded double-digit kills, with junior outside Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) leading the count with 17 kills. Junior middle Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) notched 11 kills, followed by freshman Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) with 10 kills of her own.

Defensively, junior Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights with 19 digs.

In set one, Rutgers took control from the onset, never relinquishing the lead. The score remained close until RU jumped to a 20-14 advantage. The Scarlet Knights were able to hold off the Cougars for a final set score of 25-18.

In the second set, RU got off to a slow start, allowing SIUE to reach a 10-5 lead. From that point on, Rutgers fell short of reclaiming the lead, dropping the set 18-25.

Moving on to the third set, the teams remained neck-and-neck. The score was tied 12 times on the set, but once RU achieved an 18-17 lead the team never let up for a 25-23 win.

The fourth set proved to be a similar rally to the third. SIUE controlled the set, reaching their biggest lead of 19-11. RU was able to bring the score to a 17-24 before notching four straight points to bring the deficit to three. The Cougars grabbed the winning point for a set score of 25-21.

In the final set, Rutgers once again held the lead for the entire rally. SIUE kept the score tight, but it was not enough to surpass RU. The Scarlet Knights closed the match 15-11 to secure their first win of the season.

Rutgers wraps up the Falcon Classic tomorrow against host Air Force. The match is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed live here.
