  • DALLAS (November 1, 2013) The Rutgers volleyball team was swept by SMU Friday evening at the Dedman Center by scores of 22-25, 18-25, 11-25. The match marked the second time the Scarlet Knights faced the Mustangs this season, after suffering a four-set loss in the first game of the series at the College Ave Gym on Sept. 29.

Sophomore middle blocker Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) finished with a match-high nine total blocks and added four kills on seven attacks. Second-year outside hitter Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) contributed seven kills, five digs and five block assists.

Sophomore libero Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) led RU defensively with 10 digs, while junior Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) dished out 19 assists and picked up eight digs.

SMU’s Abbey Bybel finished with 15 putdowns to lead the hosts.

The match began with both teams trading points in the first set, until RU jumped in front mid-way through at 14-11. The Scarlet Knights managed to maintain their advantage, until SMU outscored the visitors by a 7-3 margin to take its first lead since early on. With the score tied at 22 however, the Mustangs would rattle off three straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the next set, the hosts formed an 8-0 run with the game locked at four to go in front, 12-4. Rutgers cut the deficit to three points at 15-12, but the Scarlet Knights were outscored 6-2 in the closing minutes and dropped the stanza. In the final frame, RU matched the Mustangs point-for-point, until a 7-1 SMU run put the Scarlet Knights behind 17-7. Rutgers was unable to get closer than nine points for the remainder of the contest.

Rutgers is back in action on Sunday at Houston.
