PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2013) – The Rutgers volleyball team announced the promotional schedule for the 2013 home slate. All 10 home matches will feature a promotional event.
RU opens the season next week on Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights will host the Pirates at 7 p.m. at the College Ave. Gym. The match will be both “Greek Knight” and “Patriot Day”. Promotional red wigs will be given out while supplies last. Sodexo will also be selling packaged food items during the game at a designated location at the gym.
The “Greek Wars” will last from the first home match of the year, until the team’s last home match of the year against Memphis on Nov. 24th. Members of Greek organizations will be able to receive points for their attendance throughout the ten-game span. The organization that has accumulated the most points will receive a prize at the conclusion of the “wars”. A point system will also be in place to credit Greek organization members with points according to the number of sets in which they stay for.
The Scarlet Knights’ next two home games will occur in the last weekend of September. RU will host American Conference rivals Houston and Southern Methodist on Sept. 27 and 29, respectively. This promotional event for the weekend will be “Camper/Fan Appreciation Weekend”. Campers who attended the Rutgers’ volleyball camp are personally invited to attend the weekend contests and are encouraged to wear their camp t-shirt. The first 50 fans in attendance will be given a previously used Rutgers volleyball. Following the conclusion of the match, all fans are invited to an autograph session with the team.
On Oct. 25, the Scarlet Knights host Louisville for the “Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Game”. The first 100 fans will be given breast cancer bracelets. The Louisville match also marks the beginning of the “Dorm Wars”.
Similarly to the “Greek Wars”, in the “Dorm Wars” members of each dorm will be able to receive points for their game attendance. The dorm that accumulates the most points will receive one free hour in the Rutgers Zone. “Dorm Wars” will run for seven games; beginning at the Louisville game until the final home match of the year against Memphis on Nov. 24. A point system will also be put in place to track dormers’ attendance.
Rutgers will continue its home schedule on Oct. 27 against Cincinnati. The Sunday match will be “Alumni Day” as members of past Scarlet Knight volleyball teams are invited to return for a day of celebration. Alumnae are also invited to tailgate prior to the Rutgers Football homecoming game on Oct. 26 against Houston.
The Scarlet Knights will host Central Florida on Nov. 8 for their first home contest of the month. The game will be “Pizza Knight”. New Brunswick pizzeria Gerlanda’s will provide free pizza vouchers which will be distributed while supplies last to fans prior to the beginning of the match.
Friday, Nov. 15 will be the “Blackout” game for the Scarlet Knights, as the squad takes on UCONN. The first 100 fans will receive signature “Rutgers Blackout” t-shirts.
