PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 25, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s volleyball team completed its annual “Scarlet and White Scrimmage” Sunday afternoon at the College Ave. Gym.
“It’s a great exercise to go through, any time you can complete a competitive scenario like today,” commented head coach C.J. Werneke following the scrimmage. “Through scrimmages, we learn more about ourselves and today we saw a lot of nice play. I was impressed and pleased with our defensive intensity which rose throughout the five sets. Our middles are working hard and as a result they were successful from an attacking standpoint. We need to continue to work hard. The harder we work, the more successful we’re going to be.”
The squad was split into two teams and played a complete match of five sets. Team Scarlet ultimately finished as the victor; capturing the first four games by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-11 and 25-17, before dropping the fifth set to Team White, 15-13.
Sophomore outside Meghan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) led all hitters with 17 kills to pace Team Scarlet in the victory. Stephenson added 12 digs, while sophomore setter Anna Sudbury (Tomahawk, Wisc.) dished out a match-high 42 assists. Sudbury had a solid all-around game; contributing 11 digs, five kills and two blocks.
Also finishing with double-digit kills for Team Scarlet were Micaela Anderson (La Canada, Calif.), Rachel Andreassian (Fredericksburg, Texas) and Cole Trimble (Orlando, Fla.). Anderson had 16 putdowns and Andreassian and Trimble had 11 and 10, respectively.
Team Scarlet finished the match with a .242 hitting percentage.
Team White was led by Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.), who finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) came away with 12 digs for the squad in the loss.
