PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 16, 2013) – The Rutgers University volleyball team has added a contest against Colorado University, bringing the regular season total to 32 matches. RU will meet the Buffaloes on Sept. 7 in the second day of the Candlewood Suites Invitational, hosted by Syracuse University.
“We are excited about adding a match against Colorado for this upcoming season,” said head coach C.J. Werneke. “Anytime you face a team of that quality you find out more about who you are. A match against a Pac-12 team will certainly prepare us for the long season ahead and ultimately the transition to the Big Ten.”
Werneke will lead his squad against Colorado on Saturday, September 7th at 8:30 a.m. in the Women’s Building. Colorado, a member of the Pac-12, finished the 2012 season with a 14-18 overall record. The Buffaloes ended conference play with a 4-16 mark, placing them at 10th in the league.
Colorado returns rising sophomores Alexis Austin and Chelsey Keoho. Austin, an outside hitter, led the squad offensively, accumulating a team-best 364 kills (3.14 kills per set), while Keoho led the team with 299 digs and averaged 2.88 digs per set as the libero.
Rutgers will also face tournament host, Syracuse, as well as Stony Brook and Oakland in the two-day tournament. RU will first meet Oakland on Friday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. before finishing the day against the Orange at 7:30 p.m. The Scarlet Knights conclude play on Saturday against Stony Brook at 2:30 p.m.
RU opens the 2013 season on the road in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday, August 30th at the Indiana Invitational. There, the Scarlet Knights will meet future Big Ten opponent, Indiana, while also facing Kent State and Robert Morris. Rutgers hosts its first home contest of the year on September 11th against in-state rival, Seton Hall, at 7 p.m. in the College Ave. Gym.
The Scarlet Knights will hold their annual Scarlet and White intra-squad scrimmage in the College Ave. Gym on Sunday, August 25th at 4 p.m.
