PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2012) – Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition, the league announced Monday. This is the seventh time in her career and the fourth time this season that Zielinski has been honored by the conference. She was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Sept. 17.
“Each time she gets recognized she has been putting her team in great situations,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “As a result, she is getting the statistics that she is getting honored for. It’s great individual recognition but also great team recognition as well. It’s a culmination of all of her hard work throughout the season.”
The Florida native helped Rutgers to its third BIG EAST win of the season and second conference road win of the year over St. John’s (Oct. 28). The senior dished out 94 assists in two matches, including a high of 60 against the Red Storm. The setter averaged 11.75 assists per set in eight total games between the two contests.
She notched two double-doubles, one against Connecticut on Oct. 27 (34 assists, 13 digs) and one against St. John’s (60 assists, 11 digs). She now has 20 double-doubles this season. The 60 assists against St. John’s marked the third time she equaled 60 or more in a match this season. Against the Huskies, she became the second Scarlet Knight in the program’s history to record 4,000 assists in her career and now has 4,061. She moved into seventh on the school’s single-season assists list against the Red Storm, posting 1,148 in 2012.
Zielinski also played well defensively, tallying 24 digs in two matches. She now has 1,100 for her career, fifth on Rutgers’ all-time list. She averaged 3.00 digs per set between the two contests.
