Scarlet Knights are 19-15 all-time against the Pirates

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 18, 2012) – The Scarlet Knights (16-7, 2-6 BIG EAST) travel to South Orange, N.J., to take on the Seton Hall Pirates (16-5, 4-4 BIG EAST) on Friday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. in Walsh Gymnasium. Rutgers is coming off a weekend split where it picked up a victory over Syracuse (Oct. 12).

    “It’s going to be a battle, it always is,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “We’ve come out on the top end the last two years. It’s always tough when we have to go up to their place and I’m sure they’re going to have a great environment. It’s going to be a great match.”

    Seton Hall Notes

    - The Pirates are 4-4 in BIG EAST play and are coming off of a 3-1 win over Syracuse (Oct. 14) and a five-set loss to Marquette (Oct. 13).

    - Stacey Manthorpe leads Seton Hall offensively with 232 kills (2.94/s). Shelbey Manthorpe has dished out the assists, totaling 610 this season with 7.72 per set. On the defensive end, Alyssa Warren has notched 5.48 digs per set, good for second in the conference.

    - The Pirates are stingy on the defensive end, and hold opponents to a .160 hitting percentage, ranking second in the BIG EAST.

    - First-year head coach Allison Yaeger is at the helm.

    Series History

    Rutgers leads the all-time series 19-15, in a matchup that dates back to 1984. RU won last season’s contest in a sweep at College Ave. Gym. The Scarlet Knights have won the last two matchups against the Pirates.

    Last Time Out

    The Rutgers volleyball team is coming off a weekend split. Behind efficient offensive play, the Scarlet Knights downed BIG EAST foe Syracuse, 3-1, at the College Ave. Gym (Oct. 12). The Scarlet Knights earned the victory by set scores of 25-13, 25-22, 25-27 and 25-18. It marked the second conference win of the season for Rutgers and the team compiled a .288 hitting percentage, its best BIG EAST mark of the 2012 campaign. This was Rutgers’ first win over Syracuse since Oct. 10, 2003. Despite taking the first two sets, the team fell to Marquette, 3-2, in College Ave. Gym (Oct. 14). The Scarlet Knights suffered defeat by set scores of 25-22, 30-28, 19-25, 17-25 and 10-15. Rutgers moved to 1-10 all-time against the Golden Eagles and 5-3 at home this season.

    Setting It Up

    Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) has 3,919 assists, good for third place all-time and just 11 shy of taking over second place on the Rutgers career assists list. Paula Bentley currently holds second place with 3,929 assists (1988-92). Zielinski moved into third place in the win over Syracuse (Oct. 12). Against Marquette (Oct. 14), she went over 1,000 assists for the season and is currently at 1,006, 30 helpers shy of tying her for 10th on the single-season list. The senior has also totaled 1,060 digs in her career, fifth all-time at Rutgers.

    Digging Deep

    Junior libero Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) surpassed the 1,000 career digs mark in the loss at Villanova (Sept. 28). She currently sits at 1,082 career digs. The transfer, who is in her first season with the Scarlet Knights, has totaled 356 digs and moved into seventh on the single-season list in the win over Syracuse (Oct. 12). She is just 13 assists out of moving into sole possession of fifth.

    Senior Striker

    Senior Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded eight kills in the match against Marquette (Oct. 14) to give her 239 in 2012, her most in a single season in her career. She has 840 career kills, closing in on 10th place all-time at Rutgers, held by Courtney Mechling (1995-98), who totaled 905.

    Scarlet Knights in the NCAA

    Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) ranked 25th in the NCAA through Oct. 14 with 11.30 assists per set. Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) ranked 40th with a .377 hitting percentage.

    Conference Leaders

In conference play, Zielinski is third in assists per set with 10.91. Rutgers is second in conference play with 17.25 digs per set.

    Closing in on Milestones

    Junior Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) has 356 digs this season, 13 away from sole possession of fifth place on the Rutgers single-season list. Senior Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) is just 11 assists away from taking over second place on Rutgers’ career assists list. Senior Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio) is 22 kills away from 500 for her career. Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) is four kills shy of 300. Junior Brittany Bozzini (Saratoga, Calif.) is two kills shy of 300 for her career.
