PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2012) – Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. The Scarlet Knights have had a player on the Honor Roll each week this season, with Schmid being the third different Rutgers player to be named to the list.
“When you have been hitting at the efficiency that she has been hitting, it indicates she is playing at a high level,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “It is great to see she’s getting recognized for that.”
Overall, Schmid was an integral part in Rutgers’ 4-0 week, with each victory coming in the form of a sweep. The freshman totaled 40 kills in 12 sets. She committed just four errors on the week and hit .536 in the four matches. Schmid notched seven digs as well. She had double-digit kills twice, including 13 against Stetson (Sept. 8).
Schmid was named to the Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team, helping the Scarlet Knights to a 3-0 record at the tournament with three sweeps. She recorded 32 kills in the three matches. She currently leads the conference with a .459 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 3 after being tabbed the Rutgers Invitational MVP, posting two double-doubles and tallying a career-high 65 assists against Rhode Island (Sept. 1) that week. Freshman Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll (Aug. 27) for her opening-week performance when she earned a spot on the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the tournament field with 51 kills at 4.25 per set.
