PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 8, 2012) – Rutgers volleyball completed its fifth sweep of the season, all coming in the past six games, taking down Stetson in three sets at the Spartan Classic in Norfolk, Va., Saturday morning. Rutgers improved to 9-1 on the season, its best start since the 1996 squad started 10-1. The Scarlet Knights have not lost since Aug. 25 at Miami.
Rutgers recorded the victory by set scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-15. The Scarlet Knights held the Hatters (3-9) to -.028 hitting percentage in the match, the lowest by a Rutgers opponent this season. RU tallied a .231 hitting percentage.
Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the first set with five kills. Stetson tied the first set at 10, but Rutgers went on a 7-2 run, including three kills by Schmid. In the second set, the Scarlet Knights stretched their lead to eight when they went on a 5-0 run to make the score 16-8. Schmid provided two kills in the run that was set up by the four serves from freshman Ronnie Komisarek (San Mateo, Calif.). RU started the third set by scoring the first seven points and proved to be too much for the Hatters to handle.
Senior Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied nine kills, surpassing 700 for her career. She now sits at 708. Classmate Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) notched her fifth double-double of the season, totaling 25 assists and a match-high 15 digs, a new season-best.
Schmid commanded the offense with 13 kills, committing just one hitting error. She hit .667 in the match.
The Scarlet Knights will play in their final match of the Spartan Classic tonight against host Norfolk State at 6 p.m.
