PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 3, 2012) – For the second consecutive week, a Rutgers volleyball player was recognized by the BIG EAST as senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. This is the fourth time she has earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in her career.

“Our players are starting to receive recognition for the hard work they’ve been putting in over the summer and earlier in the season,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “Stephanie led our team to a Rutgers Invitational tournament championship and it’s nice that she’s being recognized by the BIG EAST for her efforts.”

Zielinski played an integral role in the team’s undefeated week (4-0) and was named tournament MVP. She recorded her second and third double-doubles of the season with the second in the win over Fordham on Aug. 29 (43 assists, 10 digs) and the third in the victory over New Hampshire on Aug. 31 (40 assists, 12 digs). To close out the Rutgers Invitational against Rhode Island, Zielinski tallied 65 assists, a new career-best, breaking her previous high of 63 vs. St. John’s on Nov. 11, 2009.

Over the past week, she had 40 or more assists in three of the four games. She has now had five games this season with 40 or more assists. She led all participants from the four teams at the Rutgers Invitational with 137 assists in just 10 sets played, averaging 13.70 assists per set. She now has 321 assists on the season, good for 11.46 per set, which both lead the BIG EAST. She also totaled 34 digs in the four games, and is second on the team with 2.07 digs per set.

Zielinski’s honor comes a week after freshman Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) was named to the Weekly Honor Roll for her opening-week performance when she earned a spot on the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the tournament field with 51 kills and 4.25 per set.

The Scarlet Knights continue their season in College Ave. Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 4, facing Lafayette at 7 p.m.
