NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2012) – The Scarlet Knights capped off the Rutgers Invitational with a win over Rhode Island, 3-1. Rutgers earned the tournament championship with set scores of 28-26, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-14. The Scarlet Knights improved to 6-1 for the first time since the 1997 season and have won four matches in a row. Rutgers went undefeated, 3-0, in its home tournament.

Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named tournament MVP after recording a career-high 65 assists in four sets with the Rams. She tallied a tournament-best 13.70 assists per set in the three matches.

Classmates Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio) and Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) were also named to the Rutgers Invitational All-Tournament Team. Orr notched a career-best 21 kills against Rhode Island and topped the tournament field with 46 kills and 5.11 kills per set. Her previous career high was 17 kills, which came against South Dakota State on Aug. 28, 2009. Jones totaled 13 kills in the match on a .455 hitting percentage and compiled a tournament-leading 1.10 blocks per set.

Overall, the Scarlet Knights led the four Rutgers Invitational teams in hitting percentage (.286), assists per set (15.70), kills per set (16.20) and digs per set (18.60). Rutgers recorded a season high in hitting percentage (.316) and assists (70) in the win over Rhode Island (2-4).

In the opening set, RU fell behind to URI 19-13. Slowly, the Scarlet Knights came back with the help of nine first-set kills by Orr to take the game late. Rutgers had a late lead in the second set, but couldn’t close it out. In the third set, the Scarlet Knights never trailed and Orr reached her career high in kills with 18 when she gave RU a 16-8 lead. Rutgers led nearly the entire fourth set to pick up the victory.

Freshman Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) notched a career-high 19 kills. Defensively, junior Brittany Bozzini (Saratoga, Calif.) amassed a season-best 18 digs, while freshman Ronnie Komisarek (San Mateo, Calif.) tallied her best match to date with 15 digs in her short collegiate career.

The Scarlet Knights continue their season in College Ave. Gym on Tuesday, Sept. 4, taking on Lafayette at 7 p.m.
