NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Aug. 31, 2012) – The Rutgers volleyball team won its second match of the day in straight sets, picking up a victory over New Hampshire at the College Ave. Gym Friday night. The Scarlet Knights improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 at the Rutgers Invitational with wins over Iona and New Hampshire. It is the first time since 1997 that Rutgers held this record through six games.

In the opening match on Friday with Iona (2-4), Rutgers won by set scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-16. It was the first three-set victory of the season for the Scarlet Knights. Senior Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio) led the offensive charge with a game-high 12 kills. Junior Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tallied 14 digs defensively. RU compiled a season-best .309 hitting percentage in the contest compared a .150 mark by Iona.
The Scarlet Knights came out victorious in the second match as well, downing the Wildcats (1-5) with set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-17.
Rutgers rolled through the first set, never trailing. In the second stanza, the Scarlet Knights only fell behind early, 5-4, but came back with the help of five mid-set kills by Orr. In the third set, Rutgers was down 6-3 early, but sparked with 6-0 run that included two kills from freshman Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) and never looked back. RU tallied a .225 hitting percentage in the match and held New Hampshire to just .089 in that category.
Orr again led the offensive effort notching 13 kills. Senior Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) contributed 11 of her own. Classmate Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) totaled 40 assists and 12 digs, her third double-double of the 2012 campaign. It was the fourth time that she reached 40 or more assists in a match this season. Defensively, Wright recorded 18 digs to lead both teams.
The Scarlet Knights will face Rhode Island (2-3) in the championship match of the Rutgers Invitational tomorrow, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m. in the College Ave. Gym. The Rams are 2-0 in the tournament. Iona and New Hampshire are scheduled to play at noon.
