PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Aug. 25, 2012) – The Rutgers volleyball team dropped its final match of the Hurricane Invitational to host Miami in three sets. This marked the first loss of the season for the Scarlet Knights (2-1), who picked up victories over Samford and Wofford in the opening day of the tournament in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Scarlet Knights fell to the Hurricanes (3-0) with sets of 15-25, 21-25 and 14-25. RU was unable to convert its attacks, recording a .107 hitting percentage to Miami’s .337. Rutgers dropped to 1-4 all-time against the Hurricanes.
Freshmen Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) led the offensive charge, notching nine and eight kills, respectively. Schmid also recorded three blocks. Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded 24 assists and defensively, libero Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) tallied 12 digs.
Lassa and Schmid were each named to the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament Team. Lassa totaled a team-best 51 kills in the three games and Schmid followed with 39 kills at the tournament. Schmid holds a team-best .341 hitting percentage. Lassa led all players in the Hurricane Invitational with an average of 4.25 kills per set, while Zielinski topped all players with 10.85 assists per set.
Rutgers will return to action against Fordham on Wednesday, Aug. 29 in Bronx, N.Y. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. The Scarlet Knights hold a 7-4 record all-time against the Rams. The teams met on Oct. 4, 2011 and RU earned the victory in four sets.
