  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Aug. 17, 2012) – In final preparation for the 2012 season, the Rutgers volleyball program will hold the Scarlet and White Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. in the College Ave Gym. The squad will be split into two teams and the scrimmage will be treated like a regular match. Admission to the event is free for fans.

Head coach CJ Werneke will begin his fifth season at the helm of the Scarlet Knights. In 2011, Werneke led the squad to its third straight season with double-digit wins, compiling 10. Last season, the team won three neutral site games and posted a 7-6 record at home.

Seniors Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) lead a total of eight returners from last year. Zielinski, a setter, compiled a career-best 1,151 assists last season and currently ranks fourth all-time on the Rutgers list with 2,913 assists. Jones, a middle blocker, tallied a .383 hitting percentage in 2011, the second-highest single-season percentage in Scarlet Knight history. Among all eight returners, RU brings back 58 percent of kills, 60 percent of attacks, 95 percent of assists, 63 percent of aces, 63 percent of digs and 59 percent of blocks from 2011.

Rutgers added 12 total players to the 2012 roster, including nine freshmen. Werneke looked to add depth to a group that was plagued by injuries in 2011. On top of adding depth, Werneke also added experience with three transfers. One junior (Tracy Wright, Quinnipiac) and two sophomores (Rachel Andreassian, UNA; Nicole Bayer, Niagara) joined the squad. Wright played in every set for the Bobcats for two seasons, leading the team with 426 digs as a sophomore. Andreassian played in four matches for UNA as a freshman, tallying a .389 hitting percentage. Bayer led Niagara with 1,228 assists at 11.37 per set. She helped the team to the NCAA Tournament and was 18th in the nation in assists per set.

The first serve of the Scarlet Knights’ 2012 season will take place at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. Rutgers is scheduled to play two games on Aug. 24, with Samford at 10 a.m. and Wofford at 4:30 p.m. Rutgers will round out the tournament with a match against host Miami on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.
