NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers volleyball team (9-16, 3-6 BIG EAST) fought back hard after an early deficit, but lost 3-1 (30-15, 30-28, 25-30 and 30-26) to St. John’s at the College Avenue Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 2.
St. John’s (23-8, 5-4 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Scarlet Knights played aggressively in the third game and cut the deficit to one. The Red Storm, led by sophomore Jackie Ahlers’ 20 kills, regained control of the match in the fourth game to take the victory.
“ The team pulled itself back together and we made some significant changes in the style of defense we were running to get our team to go, but we’re in the BIG EAST Conference and you can’t play like that,” said Rutgers 10th-year head coach Ann Leonard-House.
Senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) led RU in kills with 17 and digs with eight. Junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) had 14 kills, and freshman Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) chipped in with 11 kills and four block assists. Junior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KA) contributed 42 assists.
The Scarlet Knights will play their final two road matches of the season
next weekend when they travel to Villanova on Friday, Nov. 7, for a
7:00 p.m. match, followed by a trip to Georgetown for a 5:00 p.m. match
Sunday, Nov. 9.
