NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers volleyball team (8-13, 2-3 BIG EAST) stormed out to a 1-0 lead, but Temple took the next three games on its way to a 3-1 (27-30, 30-24, 30-20 and 30-17) victory over the Scarlet Knights on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Rutgers once again showed its strength at the net, blocking six shots in the first game, but the team managed only seven blocks over the next three games while the Owls (10-7) racked up a .336 hitting percentage over the same span.
“The first game is the way that our team should be playing,” 10th-year head coach Ann Leonard-House said. “That’s the standard we should at least be playing at right now.”
Senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) led the Knights with 10 kills, and junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) and junior Stephanie Travioli (Arlington, TX) supplied nine digs to pace the team on defense. Sophomore Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) tied a career high with 10 block assists for the second consecutive match.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to Morgantown, WV, for a BIG EAST match against West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
