NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers volleyball team (8-12, 2-3 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead, but Manhattan rallied for a 3-2 (23-30, 21-30, 30-23, 31-29 and 15-12) victory on Friday, Oct. 17, in the College Avenue Gymnasium.
The Scarlet Knights got off to a quick start and dominated play at the net as they built a two-game lead over the Lady Jaspers (9-10), but following the intermission after the second game, Manhattan began to chip away and tied the match at two games apiece. The fifth game belonged to Manhattan as it built its lead as high as five points and held off a late Scarlet Knight charge to take the match.
Senior Shalya Bush (Spokane, WA) led the Knights in kills with 15 and junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) contributed 14 kills of her own to go with a team-high 13 digs. The Scarlet Knights had a season-high 20 blocks and were led by sophomore Ashleigh Young’s (Albany, OR) career-high 10 block assists. Junior Addie Thiry (Louisville, KY) tied a career high with eight block assists and junior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) set a career high with six block assists.
RU will play its final non-conference match of the season when it hosts Temple on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7:00 p.m.
