PRINCETON, N.J. – The Rutgers women’s track and field team traveled down to Princeton, N.J to compete in the Sam Howell Invitational on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4. RU had three first place finishes including a relay and two field events.
"I thought the team performed very well despite the unusually high winds,” said head coach James Robinson. “Going into a competition, the goal for everyone is to keep improving personal performances and qualify for the post season. The team is starting to grasp this concept as each week we're accomplishing both objectives."
Freshman Alex Kelly (Florham Park, N.J.) and senior Jessica Bandy (West Keansburg, N.J.) placed first and second in the javelin, Kelly throwing 43.59m and Bandy throwing 43.50m. Both achieved BIG EAST, ECAC and NCAA standards.
The 4x400 meter relay consisting of juniors Erin Berg (North Whales, Pa.), Lesney Elgin (West Orange, N.J.), freshman Kristin Crawford (Prospect Park, N.J.), and junior Deann Green (Oak Park, Ill.) placed first with a winning time of 3:54.79.
In the field events, sophomore Jamie Walker (Lawnside, N.J.) won the long jump with a leap of 5.47m. Additionally junior Natalie Clickett (Union City, Pa.) competed in the discus placing second, making a mark of 46.01m, a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifier.
In the distance events, senior Cheyenne Ogletree (Garfield, N.J.) placed third in the 3000 meter run clocking a time of 10:19.76. Ogletree also competed in the 1500 meter run placing seventh with a time of 4:38.50. While in the sprint events, freshman Brittni Rodriguez (East Brunswick, N.J) achieved a BIG EAST qualifying time in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.91, placing third. Following Rodriguez was freshman Zainab Bisiolu (Union, N.J.) placing fifth with a time of 25.32, while Walker placed eighth with a time of 25.42.
Two more BIG EAST qualifying times were achieved by RU senior Bryanna Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.74, placing third. Junior Avonie Parchment (Apopka, Fla.) also placed third in the 400 meter hurdles, clocking in with a final time of 1:03.94.
The Scarlet Knights track and field team will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. on Thursday, April 9 through Saturday, April 11 to compete in the Sea Ray Relays. RESULTS
