  • NEW YORK, NY – Senior Julie Culley (Lebanon, NJ) captured first place in the mile on the final day of the Collegiate Invitational in New York City. Culley ran the event in a career-best 4:46.34, one second off the school record.

Sophomore Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) also had an impressive finish, placing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.61. Marshall broke the Rutgers school record in the long jump in Friday’s competition. The record was set by Pamela Birchett more than 13 years ago. Marshall’s jump of 20’1/2” placed her third in the event, qualifying her for the ECACs.

The mile relay team of Danielle Hobson (West Orange, NJ), Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ), Sherry White (Orange, NJ) and Dominique Sanon (Bridgeport, CT) placed third in its heat with a time of 3:49.62.

For the men, sophomore David Klics (Lincoln Park, NJ) led the way with a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Klics ran in 7.96, which is a new school record and moves him to second on the BIG EAST times list. He is now only 1/100 of a second away from provisionally qualifying for the NCAA ‘B’ mark.

Freshman Marcel Coleman (Harrisburg, PA) also had a good day, finishing with fifth place in the 60-meter dash (6.97), which was a BIG EAST/IC4A qualifying mark. Freshman Tom Morley (Haddon Twp., NJ) and junior Xavier Mendez (Portage, IN) finished first and second respectively in their section in the 800-meter run with times of 1:54.85 and 1:55.94. Morley’s time qualified him for the BIG EAST Championships.

In the opening day of the Invitational, Friday, Feb. 14, freshman Ryan Westman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) highlighted the meet for the men, qualifying for Saturday’s finals in both the 200 and 400-meters. His 200-meter time of 21.97 is a new Rutgers school record. He ran the 400-meters in 47.61 to earn a spot in the finals.

Both teams will travel to Syracuse, NY, next weekend (Feb. 21-23) for the BIG EAST Championships.
