Rutgers Places Fourth at Penn State Invitational

  • UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- The women’s track team placed fourth, out of eleven teams, at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18.

    Penn State took first place with 171 points, Cornell finished in second with 130.5, Syracuse had 76 points for third and Rutgers tallied 74 points. Villanova finished fifth (68), Bucknell was sixth (48), Boston College placed seventh (46), St. Joseph’s placed eighth (35), La Salle finished ninth (21), St. Francis was tenth (19.5) and Maryland Eastern Shore placed eleventh with 10 points.

    Julie Culley (Lebanon, NJ) won the 3000-meter event with a time of 9:27.12, which was an NCAA Divisional qualifying mark. Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ) came in seventh in the same event in 10:08.58, making her a BIG EAST qualifier.

    The 4x400 meter relay team of Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ), Danielle Hobson (West Orange, NJ), Sherry White (Orange, NJ) and Dominique Sanon (Bridgeport, CT) came in second with a time of 10:13.40, a BIG EAST qualifying mark.

    The distance medley team, Amonica Phipps (San Diego, CA), Agyeiwa Weathers (Jersey City, NJ), Julie Clifford (Haworth, NJ) and Julie Delimon (Stanhope, NJ) also took second in 12:13.40, qualifying for BIG EAST.

    Reva McEachern (Pennsauken, NJ) finished second in the high jump with a jump of 1.68 meters (5’6”) and Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) finished third with the same mark. Hobson placed fourth in the 400 with a time of 57.18, qualifying for ECAC and BIG EAST, while Todd took eighth in the 60-meter dash in 7.92

    Phipps was a BIG EAST qualifier with a mark of 214.73 in the 800, also placing her second and White placed seventh in the 500 in 118.30. Amina Zohny (Maplewood, NJ) had a seventh place finish in the 1000-meter with a time of 256.75, qualifying her for both BIG EAST and ECAC.

    Desiree Battle (Syracuse, NY) had an 11.36-meter jump to finish fourth in the triple jump. Claire Inskeep (Sayreville, NJ) had a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 12.99, finishing seventh and qualifying for BIG EAST. Inskeep also placed seventh in the 20-pound weight throw (15.38).

    The 5000-meter was not scored, but Rutgers had a good showing with three top-five finishes, all Metropolitan qualifiers. Delimon finished second (18:03.52), Kathryn Tappen (Morristown, NJ) placed fourth (18:19.55) and Stacey Muchal (Jermyn, PA) finished in fifth place (18:32.45).

    The women’s track team will be competing next weekend at the New York Armory Invitational in Bronx, NY on Friday, Jan. 24.
