Rutgers Track and Field Competes at New Year’s Invitational

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the indoor season at the New Year’s Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 5, in Princeton, N.J.

    On the women’s side there were many top performers including sophomore Coryn Gomez (Somerset, NJ), sophomore Ariel Brockman (Marlton, NJ) and freshman Sophia Wallace, as they led the 1-2-3 sweep of the 60 meter dash. Gomez, Brockman and Wallace came in at a time of 7.88, 8.02 and 8.06, respectively. The 4x400m relay team of sophomores Natasha Norville (Somerset, NJ), Elina Ploskin (Fairlawn, NJ), Simone Thomas (Willingboro, NJ) and junior Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ) took first in the event with a time of 3:57.60. Todd also placed first in the 300 meter dash, clocking 40.66, followed by sophomore Zeena Hazuri (East Brunswick, NJ), who took fourth place (42.21). Hazuri also placed second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.12), while Norville took third in the 300 meter dash (1.17.16) and sophomore Stephanie Zottoli (Old Bridge, NJ) placed third in the mile run with a time of 5:20.62.

    In the field events, senior Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) tied for second place in the high jump with a leap of 5’3”. Junior Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) (52’5 ½”), senior Kiara Adams (Westminster, MD) (51’3”) and sophomore Amanda Jacobs (Thompson, ND) (46’9 ½”) placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 20-pound throw. Adams also took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 43’9 ¼”.

    For the men, juniors Rowan Clarke (Teaneck, NJ) and Gary Peters (Bronx, NY) took first and second place in the triple jump with a leap of 47’11 ¼” and 47’10”, respectively. Senior Sam Segond (East Stroudsburg, PA) won the shot put with a toss of 56’3”. Sophomore Daryl Black (Voorhees, NJ) tied for third place in the high jump (6’5”), while junior Ambar Patel (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) finished third in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:47.13.

    The men will next compete at the Fordham Invitational on Friday, Jan. 7, while the women will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 8 at the Princeton Invitational.
