Women's Track and Field Ties for Fifth at BIG EAST Championships

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women’s track and field team tied Georgetown for fifth place with 57 points at the 2004 Outdoor BIG EAST Track and Field Championship at Rutgers on May 2. The fifth-place finish was the highest ever for the Scarlet Knights, who had previously finished seventh in 1998 and 1999. Miami won its fourth consecutive title and sixth in seven years.

    Junior Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) won her second event of the meet with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles (13.78). Junior Amonica Phipps (Amherst, VA) had a strong fourth-place finish (2:10.80) in the 800 meters, while junior Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ) finished eighth (17:36.60) in the 5000 meter run to pick up one team point.

    In the field, senior Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) took fifth in the high jump (1.70m) and sophomore Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) finished seventh (47.93m) in the hammer throw. Sophomore Kahimah Liverman (Paterson, NJ) was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.48 meters.

    The team will return to action at the ECAC Championships at Yale’s outdoor track and field complex beginning on Thursday, May 13, through Sunday, May 16.
