NEWARK, DE - Using balanced scoring, the Rutgers women’s track and field team cruised to victory at the Delaware Invitational in Newark, DE, on April 10. RU scored 156.50 points, defeating its closest competition, Rider, by 59.5 points.
Junior Angela Messerschmidt (Berwick, PA) had a good day in the hurdling events, taking first (1:03.85) in the 400-meter hurdles and fourth (15.05) in the 100-meter hurdles. Junior Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) and freshman Ariel Brockman (Marlton, NJ) took first (12.08) and second (12.37) in the 100-meter dash, respectively. Brockman also competed in the 200-meter dash and finished fifth (26.05).
In the 5000-meter run, freshmen Nova Roman (Monroe, NJ) and Marissa Detata (Brick, NJ) finished second (18:21.26) and third (18:42.67), respectively, while senior Jamie Kerstetter (Monroe, NJ) and freshman Danielle Patoir (Glen Rock, NJ) also finished 2-3 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with Kerstetter taking second (11:24.77) and Patior running in third (11:38.55).
The Scarlet Knights also had a successful day in the field. Sophomore Kahimah Liverman (Paterson, NJ) finished first in the triple jump (12.06m), while senior Jen Austin (Garfield, NJ) took first place in the javelin with a throw of 44.63 meters. RU went 2-3-4 in the shot put and the discus. In the shot, sophomore Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) was second (13.27m), senior Kiara Adams (Westminster, MD) was third (13.14m) and senior Candice Schultz (Beachwood, NJ) was fourth (12.80m).
In the discus, junior La-krisha Howard (Plainfield, NJ) was second (42.62m), Ash was third (41.00m) and freshman Amanda Jacobs (Thompson, ND) was fourth (39.98m). Ash also competed in the hammer throw, taking second (44.97m), and senior Helena Lamothe (Ridgewood, NJ) was third (5.31m) in the long jump.
The Scarlet Knights will next compete at the Metropolitan Championship in Jamaica, NY, on Saturday, April 17.
