  • WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Junior Sam Segond (East Stroudsburg, PA) had a successful day, registering a pair of first-place finishes and NCAA-qualifying marks to lead the Rutgers track and field team in competition at the Monmouth University Season Opener today. Segond took first in both the shot put (16.71m) and discus (57.31m) to lead the Scarlet Knights, while on the women’s side, RU registered 10 first-place marks.

    Junior David Klics (Lincoln Park, NJ) was also victorious for the men, taking first in the 110m hurdles, while senior Lloyd Nolan (Bronx, NY) led a 1-2-4 finish in the pole vault with a mark of 4.70m. Fellow senior Dustin Runkle (Ft. Worth, IN) took second at 4.70m, while sophomore David Jackson (Pennington, NJ) was fourth at 4.25m. In the 800m run, junior Mike Redden (So. Orange, NJ) finished second at 1:56.41 while Lonnie Washington (Elizabeth, NJ) took second in the high jump at 1.89m. Sophomore Rowan Clarke (Teaneck, NJ) and junior Brian Lee (Mt. Laurel, NJ) claimed third-place finishes in the long jump (21-4 ¼) and javelin (60.34m), respectively.

    Sophomore Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ) was a double winner on the women’s side, taking first in the 100m dash (12.07m) and 200m dash (24.91). In addition, freshman Ariel Brockman (Marlton, NJ) took second in the 100m dash at 12.34. Other first-place finishes came from senior Julie Culley (Lebanon, NJ) in the 1500m run (4:.37.50), Danielle Patoir (Glen Rock, NJ) in the steeplechase (12:10.00) and Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) in the high jump (1.60m).

    Helena Lamothe (Ridgewood, NJ) finished first in the triple jump at 10.70m and also took second in the long jump (5.29m) to finish off a productive day. The trio of Kiara Adams (Westminster, MD), Lakrisha Howard (Plainfield, NJ) and Jen Austin (Garfield, NJ) rounded out the individual first-place finishes. Adams took first in the shot put (12.65m), Howard in the discus (41.00m) and Austin in the javelin (40.72m). The 4x100 relay team also finished first, clocking 47.68.

    Angela Messerschmidt (Berwick, PA) took second in the 400m hurdles at 1:04.58 and third in the 100m hurdles (15.21), while Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ) followed Culley in the 1500m run with a second-place finish at 4:43.66. Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ) was second in the 200m dash behind Todd at 25.82.
