Mezzasalma Earns Silver in Javelin; Asha Ruth Picks Up Bronze in Long Jump

    TAMPA, Fla. (May 3, 2014) –  Junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) will be bringing home gold after capturing the long jump title highlighting day two action at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

    The Scarlet Knights sit in seventh place after the second day’s action through nine events scored. SMU leads the way with 108 points followed by Louisville in second with 49.20 and UCF in third with 38 points.  RU has collected 24 points including Farquharson’s first place victory.

    Farquharson set a personal best in capturing the long jump title as she reached a distance of 6.18m (20’ 3 ½”). Teammate and redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) picked up the bronze with a third place leap of 5.92m (19’ 5 ¼”).

    In the javelin, senior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) was the runner-up in the event.  Mezzasalma captured silver with a throw of 48.26m (158’ 4”).

    Five Scarlet Knights advanced to finals racing on Sunday.  Farquharson qualified for the 100m and 200m finals, Ruth and senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) moved on to the 400m finals and freshman Nicole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.) will be racing in the finals of the 800m.

    The heptathlon also wrapped up on Saturday.  Senior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) placed 10th collecting a personal best 4552 points and freshman Drew Andrews (Florence, N.J.) took 13th with 3875 points.

    The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships conclude on Sunday.
