PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 10, 2014) -- After capturing back-to-back Colonial Relay titles, the Rutgers women’s track and field team returns to action at the Spec Towns Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia.
At the Colonial Relays last weekend, RU picked up nine ECAC qualifying marks and brought home titles with the 4x100, 4x200 and sprint relay teams, while redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) won both the 200m and 400m and junior Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) won the 800m in the University Division.
The sprint medley relay squad, which was comprised of redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.), junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Nichole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.), set a new school, stadium and meet record (3:53.42), while Ugboaja, Ruth, Farquharson and sophomore Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.) set new stadium and meet records with the 4x200 relay team (1:37.14).
Last year at the Spec Towns National Invite, the 4x400 relay team of senior Ugboaja, Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) and Ruth along the junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) set what was then a new Rutgers record (3:35.77) to highlight the Scarlet Knights accomplishments.
Other notable performances included Ruth taking third in the long jump (6.17m), followed by Farquharson in fifth (6.01m), Gillon placing fourth in the 100m (11.72), junior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) coming in fourth in the 100m hurdles (14.56) and senior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) taking fourth in the javelin (42.79m).
Following this weekend’s meet, the Rutgers women’s track and field team returns to action at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton on April 18-19.
