Women’s Track & Field Heads to Fred Hardy Invitational

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 27, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s outdoor track and field team will travel to Richmond, Va. for the Fred Hardy Invitational. The meet is set for Friday, Mar. 28 and Saturday, Mar. 29.

    Rutgers opened its outdoor season last weekend with the Bulls Invitational and the UCF Black & Gold Challenge. The Scarlet Knights captured six event titles at the Bulls Invite, along with the javelin, long jump and 4x400 titles at UCF.

    Redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) had a stellar weekend, setting a new school record in the 100m with a time of 11.54 at the Bulls Invite. Ruth also took first in the 200m crossing the finish line at 24.56. At UCF, the senior grabbed the top spot in the long jump leaping 6.11m.

    Senior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) earned back-to-back titles in javelin on the weekend. Mezzasalma placed first with a new personal record distance of 47.08 at the Bulls Invite, followed by another first place throw of 42.17 at UCF.

    In relays, Rutgers recorded a first place time of 45.62 in the 4x100 at the Bulls Invite.  The relay team consisted of junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), senior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.), Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) and Ruth.

    The next relay title was earned in the 4x400 team at UCF. The team of junior Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.), sophomore Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.), freshman Nicole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) clocked in at 46.88.

    Last season at the Fred Hardy Invitational, Rutgers recorded eight top-3 finishes at the meet.

    In the high jump, senior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) took first with a height of 1.65m, while teammate senior Emily Vargas (Clark, N.J.) placed third clearing the bar at 1.60m.

    In the javelin, the Scarlet Knights went 1-2-3 with Mezzasalma taking the second place spot after recording a 40.81m throw.

    The Scarlet Knights will next head to the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. starting on Friday, April 5.
