TAMPA, Fla. (March 21, 2014) – The 2014 outdoor season kicked off for the Rutgers women’s track and field team as redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) set a new school record in the 100m and the Scarlet Knights captured six event titles at the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF on Friday.
"The team competed very well and we came away from the competition with some great performances and a new school record,” said head coach James Robinson. “It’s a good start to the outdoor season."
Highlighting the six first place finishes for RU was Ruth’s time of 11.54 in the 100m for new a Scarlet Knight bench mark. Ruth resets the record of 11.60 that was held by teammate Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) set at last season’s NCAA East Regionals.
The 100m was not Ruth’s only title as she also claimed first place in the 200m in 24.56 and as a member of the 4x100 relay team. The relay team, which also included junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.), senior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Gillon, posted a first place time of 45.62.
Ruth also put in a notable performance in the long jump at 6.21m (20’4 ½“) for third place
RU claimed two other titles on the track. Freshman Nichole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.) kicked off her first outdoor season as a Scarlet Knight posting a first place time of 2:13.34 in the 800m and junior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) claimed the top spot in the 400m hurdles with the fifth best time in RU history at 1:01.28.
Joining Ruth among the top times in the 100m were teammates Gillon and Farquharson as Rutgers claimed three of the top four times in the event. Farquharson clocked in at 11.60m for second place, as well as the second best time in RU history, while Gillon placed fourth in 11.70.
Also notable among the Scarlet Knight racing performances was junior Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) posting a second place finish in the 1500m by clocking in at 4:44.45.
Senior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) highlighted RU’s efforts in the field as she won the javelin at a distance of 47.08m, a new personal record. She surpasses her previous best of 43.53m recorded at last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
Farquharson took second in the long jump to set a new personal best, obliterating her previous high of 6.01m at last season’s Spec Towns Invitational at Georgia. She was followed by Ruth’s third place long jump.
In the triple jump, freshman Bryanna Grant (Cranford, N.J.) took fourth in the event at a distance of 11.63m in her outdoor debut .
The Rutgers women’s outdoor track and field team is back in action on Saturday, March 22 at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
