PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 19, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s track and field program will once again kickoff the outdoor season by traveling to the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF on Friday, March 21 and also participate at the UCF Invitational at Saturday, March 22.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off an indoor season that saw Rutgers capture the 2014 Metropolitan title, place ninth at the American Athletic Conference Championships and take fourth at the ECAC Championships. RU also saw 10 Scarlet Knights place among the top 10 at the ECAC Championships to close out the indoor season.
At the conference championships, redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) brought home the long jump title and took silver in the 400m, while at the ECAC Championships, she set a new school record in the 200m and placed second in the long jump. .
Last season at the Bulls Invite, senior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) took home the 100m title and Ruth took first in the long jump (6.07m).
Gillon was one of three Scarlet Knights to capture BIG EAST & ECAC qualifying times in the 100m and one of four to earn BIG EAST & ECAC qualifying marks in the 200m. Gillon won the 100m (11.48), while Ruth took fourth (11.61) and junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) came in 12th (11.93). In the 200m, Gillon led the Scarlet Knights with a third place finish (23.90) with Ruth coming in fifth (24.21), senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) taking sixth (24.23) and rounded out by Farquharson in seventh (24.37).
In other track events at the Bulls Invite last season, current junior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) placed fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:02.65), senior Ashley Decker (Newfield, N.J.) took fourth in the 1500m (4:38.37) and junior Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) raced her way to a third place finish in the 800m (2:17.43).
In the relays, Farquharson, Ruth, senior Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Gillon helped the 4x100 relay team to a third place finish (45.71), while Grant, sophomore Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.), senior Rachel Leeke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Hurrington combined to give the 4x400 squad a fourth place time (3:55.04).
Following this weekend’s events in Florida, the Rutgers women’s outdoor track and field team will head to the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, Va. beginning on Friday, March. 28.
