Women’s Indoor Track & Field To Compete at Metropolitan Championships

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J.  (January 29, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s indoor track and field team is back in action this weekend at the Metropolitan Championships at the NYC Armory.

    Last season, the Scarlet Knights placed fourth at the championships, including three event victories in the 60m, 4x400 relay and long jump.

    Redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) took home the long jump title (6.03m), while senior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) captured the 60m dash title (7.60).  Both were also members of the winning 4x400 relay team (3:47.31) that also included seniors Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.).

    Gillon also placed second in the 200m (24.79) with teammate sophomore Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.) taking eighth (25.49).  Hurrington also logged a fifth place times 200m (25.32) and in the 400m (57.15).

    Other notable track results from last year included Meagan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.) claiming fourth in the 60m hurdles (9.02) and sophomore Niyah Lamar (Parsipanny, N.J.) taking fourth in the 60m (7.83). Sophomore Paige Senatore (Delsea, N.J.) placed fifth in the 5000m (17:59.57) followed by senior Rashmi Singh (Flemington, N.J.) in sixth (18:00.71), and junior Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) raced to a fifth place time in the mile (5:07.88).  Also senior Rachel Leeke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) logged an eighth place finish in the 600m (1:17.28).

    Rutgers’ 4x800 relay team, which included current junior Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) along with O’Donnell, placed seventh in the event (9:43.34). 

    In field events, along with Ruth capturing the long jump title, RU was led by senior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) with her second place performance in the high jump (1.60m). Ugboaja also had a sixth place performance in the long jump (5.58m).

    Following this weekend’s Metropolitan Championships, the Rutgers women’s indoor track and field squad will take part Valentine’s Invitational in Boston, Mass on Friday, Feb. 7.
