PISCATAWAY, N.J.  (January 16, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s indoor track & field season continues with the Great Dane Invitational hosted by the University of Albany at the NYC Armory.

Last season, the Scarlet Knights placed fifth in the 20-team field with fellow American Athletic Conference member Connecticut winning the Great Dane title.

The Rutgers relay teams earned a pair of first place victories to highlight results from last year’s meet including a new Great Dane meet record by the 4x400 relay squad.

The 4x400 relay team which included current Scarlet Knights seniors Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.), Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) and Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.), set a new meet record with a time of 3:45.58.    Additionally the distance medley team of juniors Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.),  Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) also took home a first place time.

Ruth, who is a two-time AAC Track Athlete of the Week this season, also had a pair of second place results at the meet last season.  She collected what was then the third fastest time in RU school history in the 400m in a time of 55.30 and also took second in the long jump with a distance of 5.92m.

Other highlights from the meet included Gillon with a fourth place time in the 400m with a time of 56.85 and Hurrington taking sixth in the 500m crossing the finish line in a time of 1:16.00 Additionally, junior Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.70m.

Rutgers is coming off its lone home meet of the season last weekend at the Rutgers Invitational.  The Scarlet Knights captured nine titles along with seven ECAC qualifying times.  Ruth, who was named AAC Track Athlete of the Week, for her efforts last week at the RU Invite ran the fifth fastest time in the 400m in the country to date (54.75) and repeated as the 200m champion (24.68).

Following Friday’s Great Dane Invitational, the Rutgers women’s indoor track & field team will travel to Boston, Mass. to participate in the Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 24.
