RU Men Finish Fourth, Women Ninth at BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships

  • SYRACUSE, NY - The Rutgers men’s indoor track and field team scored 79 points to finish in fourth place while the women had 28 points to finish in ninth place at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Feb. 21-22, at the Carrier Dome.

    Connecticut won the team title with 160 points, followed by Notre Dame (153 points), Georgetown (82 points), Rutgers (79 points), Virginia Tech (57 points), Villanova (56 points), Providence (50 points), Miami (43 points), Seton Hall (38 points), Pittsburgh (36 points), Syracuse (23 points) and Boston College (two points).

    Junior Anthony Butler (Pittsgove, NJ) highlighted the Scarlet Knights’ performance with a victory in the high jump (2.11m). Junior David Klics (Lincoln Park, NJ) had an IC4A qualifying score of 5,098 in the heptathlon to finish in second place. In the triple jump, Rowan Clarke (Teaneck, NJ) finished third with an IC4A qualifying score of 15.06m. Ryan Westman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) took third place in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:03.07, which is an IC4A qualifying time. In the 200 meter dash, Rob Waters (Bellmawr, NJ) earned a fourth place finish in 21.81.

    In the relays, RU’s 4x800 meter squad finished in sixth place in 7:43.31 while the 4x400 relay team qualified for the IC4A’s and finished fifth (3:17.19).

    On the women’s side, Miami won the team title with 170 points. The Scarlet Knights scored 28 points, ahead of Connecticut (27 points), Boston College (25.5 points), Virginia Tech (22 points), Seton Hall (19.5 points) and St. John’s (11 points).

    Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) had an ECAC-qualifying score of 1.70 in the high jump for a fourth-place finish. Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) was fifth in the shot put (13.69m) and also qualified for the ECAC’s. Jacqueline Todd (Willingboro, NJ) placed fifth in the 400 meter dash in an ECAC-qualifying time of 56.79. The 4x800 meter relay team finished in seventh place (9:10.00).

    Several members of the men’s team will return to the track in two weeks to compete in the IC4A Championships Friday through Sunday, March 5-7, in Boston, MA, while members of the women’s team will participate in the ECAC Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7, also in Boston, MA.
