PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 9, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s indoor track and field team returns to action this weekend in its lone home meet of the season. The Scarlet Knights host the Rutgers Invitational at the Busch Bubble on Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11. The meet begins at 11 a.m. on both days.
Joining RU in the competition will be student-athletes from St. Peter’s, Temple, CCNY, St. John’s and Villanova.
This weekend marks the second meet of the indoor season for the Scarlet Knights as they return to the track after several top performances at the New Year’s Invitational at Princeton in early December.
Redshirt senior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) was named the American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week following her performance in the 300m at the New Year’s Invite with a new school record of 39.50.
Ruth was also a member of the winning 4x400 team that also included freshman Nicole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.), sophomore Alayna Famble (Stockbridge, Ga.) and junior Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.).
Other notable track performances included senior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) crossing the finish line right behind Ruth in the second place in the 300m (40.39) for the third fastest time in RU history, as well as, freshman Nicole Nicholas (Jersey City, N.J.) taking second in the 600m (1:33.17) and senior Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) coming in second in the 1000m (2:56.41).
In the field events, senior Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) won the height jump with the best mark of her career (1.70m) and junior Sonya Schement (Murphy, Texas.) took third in the pole vault (3.30m).
Following this weekend’s meet, the Rutgers women’s indoor track & field team will return to action at the Great Dane Classic on Friday, Jan. 17.
