PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Syracuse, NY, on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21, for the 25th Indoor BIG EAST Championship meet. Last season, the men’s team registered a fourth-place finish, while the women finished 12th. The Miami women’s team and the Notre Dame men’s squad will look to defend their conference titles after winning in 2003.
Junior David Klics (Lincoln Park, NJ) will look to defend his title in the 60-meter hurdles. He established the school record (7.94) in the event at the meet last year and will look to help the team improve on its 2003 performance, which was its best finish ever. The Scarlet Knights also return several athletes who registered second-place finishes at last year’s meet, including junior Anthony Butler (Pittsgove, NJ) in the high jump and sophomores Ryan Westman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) in the 500 meters and Marquis Allen (Mays Landing, NJ) in the long jump. Westman and Allen hold the school records in their respective events. All-American junior Sam Segond (East Stroudsburg, PA), a three-time BIG EAST Champion, will look to score high in the shot put.
Junior Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, NJ), fresh off of her school record-setting performance in the in the 60-meter hurdles (8.43 ) at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 6, will lead the women’s team into the championship meet at the Carrier Dome, competing in the hurdles as well as the long jump. The team will also look to junior Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ) in the mile and junior Amonica Phipps (Amherst, VA) in the 800 meters to place in the track events. In the field, senior Kiara Adams (Westminster, MD), the school indoor record holder in the shot put, will lead a contingent of performers who have had a very strong season thus far. Senior Kerry Ann Mitchell (East Orange, NJ) will compete in the high jump and senior Desiree Battle (Syracuse, NY) will look to score points in the triple jump.
