NEW YORK, NY - In the last warm-up before the BIG EAST Championship, the Rutgers men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the New Balance Armory Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
The men took 20th out of 33 teams in the University Division. The highlight for the Scarlet Knights was the first-place finish of junior Sam Segond (East Stroudsburg, PA) in the shot put with a throw of 17.42 meters. The men also scored points with a sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay (10:09.85).
The women’s team finished 15th out of 30 teams in the University Division. The top finisher for the Scarlet Knight women was junior Belmax DeJesus (Fort Lee, NJ), who took fourth place (5:00.60) in the mile. Following her in eighth place (5:08.84) was senior Jamie Kerstetter (Monroe, NJ). Other scorers on the track included junior Amonica Phipps (Amherst, VA) with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters (2:15.24) and freshman Nova Roman (Monroe, NJ) with an eighth-place finish in the 5000 meters (18:33.67).
The RU women had several strong finishes in the field events. Senior Helena LaMothe (Ridgewood, NJ) finished sixth (5.49m) in the long jump, sophomore Cycerli Ash (Beach Lake, PA) took seventh (13.51m) in the shot put and senior Desiree Battle (Syracuse, NY) finished eighth (11.32m) in the triple jump.
Both squads will head to Syracuse, NY, for the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22.
