ATHENS, Ga. (April 14, 2013) – Members of the 4x400 relay team – senior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.), junior Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.), sophomore Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) and redshirt junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) - set a new Rutgers record to highlight the Scarlet Knights outdoor track and team’s results at the Georgia Spec Towns National Invitational this weekend.
"We were able to obtain some high quality performances in a great field that included four SEC and two BIG TEN Universities,” said Rutgers head coach James Robinson. “There were a number of personal bests set, BIG EAST, ECAC, and NCAA Regional performances obtained, as well as a new school record set in the 4 x 400 relay. We look ahead and will prepare for the prestigious Penn Relays."
The 4x400 relay squad captured a time of 3:35.77, resetting the former RU of 3:36.91 captured at last year’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights’ time is the second best in the event thus far among BIG EAST competitors.
RU was also led by senior Alexandra Kelly (Florham Park, N.J.) taking first place in the javelin. She topped the competition with a distance of 43.51m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier), while teammate junior Elaina Mezzasalma (Morganville, N.J.) took fourth throwing a distance of 42.79m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) and freshman Solveig Loeken (Randolph, N.J.) notching fifth with a distance of 40.02m (BIG EAST Qualifier).
Ruth also had another notable performance, in addition to her 4x400 relay effort, in the long jump. Reaching a distance of 6.17m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier), she leapt to the second best performance in the conference thus far and puts her name tied for 12th in the region. Also in the long jump, Farquharson took fifth at 6.01m (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier) and Ugboaja finished in ninth reaching 5.77 (BIG EAST Qualifier).
In other field events, freshman Adrienne Williams (Hamilton, N.J.) registered fourth place in the triple jump at 11.97m (BIG EAST Qualifier).
The 100m saw Gillon finish in fourth racing to a time of 11.72 (BIG EAST & ECAC Qualifier), while freshman Kaprice James (Roselle, N.J.), in the 100m hurdles, recorded a time of 14.56 (BIG EAST Qualifier) to take sixth.
Ruth picked up another BIG EAST & ECAC qualifying performance in the 200m. She finished sixth in the event crossing the finish line in a time of 23.93.
In the 400m hurdles, RU picked up a BIG EAST qualifying time by sophomore Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.). Grant clocked in a 1:02.22 to take fourth.
Additionally, the Scarlet Knights had three finishers in the top eight of the 800m with junior Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) taking fifth (2:13.56), sophomore Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.) coming in seventh (2:16.99), and sophomore Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) placing eight (2:18.91).
In other relay action, RU’s 4x100 relay team of Farquharson, Ugboaja, Gillon, and Ruth posted a time of 45.79 to take fifth.
The Rutgers women’s track and field team returns to action at the Larry Ellis Invitational Fri.-Sat. April 19-20 in Princeton, N.J.
