TAMPA, Fla. (May 6, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s track and field team scored 45 points en route to its 10th-place showing at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, May 6 at the USF Track Stadium. Junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) led the Scarlet Knights, earning her first career BIG EAST title in the long jump.
Ruth captured the long jump crown with a winning leap of 21’0.5” (6.41m) to close out Saturday nights’ action. She helped add to the Scarlet Knights’ point total with standout performance both in the field and on the track. Ruth recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 and 200-meter dash, clocking times of 11.71 and 24.23, respectively.
Rutgers also finished runner up in two relay events as Ruth joined sophomores Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) and Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and freshman Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) in the 4x100 and 4x400. The group ran a time of 45.34 to finish second in the 4x100 and clocked 3:36.91 in the 4x400 for another second-place time.
Gillon scored individually in the 100 and 200, finishing fifth (11.70) and seventh (24.29), while senior Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) added points in two events. Okobi placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 19’6” (5.94m) and was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 41’0.5” (12.51m).
The Scarlet Knights also placed eighth in the 4x800-meter relay as Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), Felicia O’Donnell (Franklinville, N.J.), Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) ran a time of 8:57.72.
Rutgers will return to action on Friday, May 11 for the 2012 ECAC Outdoor Championships in Princeton, N.J.
