PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 14, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s track and field team scored 192 points en route to claiming its second-straight 2012 Metropolitan Outdoor Championship on Saturday, April 14, at the Bauer Track and Field Center. The Scarlet Knights recorded 19 top-three finishes, including four event victories.
Junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) gave RU a victory in the 200-meter dash, running a first-place time of 23.90. Ruth was also the top Scarlet Knight in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 11.62 to finish second. Sophomore Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) joined Ruth in both short sprints as she took second in the 200 with a time of 24.16 and was third in the 100-meter in 11.63. Freshman Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) was second in the 400 as she ran a time of 55.14.
Freshman Meagan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.) finished third in 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.58. Jillian Grant (Matawan, N.J.) was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.92, followed by Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) who was seventh in 1:05.20. In the 200, Farquharson placed seventh in 24.77, while Corryn Hurrington (Bowie Md.) took eighth in 24.81. Hurrington also finished sixth in the 400, running a time of 56.28.
Rutgers took home a win in the 800-meter run behind a first-place performance from Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.). Deckert ran a time of 2:14.00. Stephanie Krausser (Wall, N.J.) also scored in the 800, placing fifth with a time of 2:19.18. In the 1,500-meter run, Rutgers took 3-4-5 led by Victoria Pontecorvo (Staten Island, N.Y.) in 4:42.01, Allison Payenski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) in 4:42.99 and Jennifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) in 4:43.33.
Senior Kelly Flannigan (Middletown, Conn.) was second in the 5,000-meter run in 18:24.43, while Rashmi Singh (Flemington, N.J.) and Anjelica Brinkofski (Somerset, N.J.) added points in the 10,000-meter. Singh finished second with a time of 38:30.41, while Brinkofski was third in 38:40.61.
The Scarlet Knights won a pair of relay races and finished runner-up in another. RU was victorious in the 4x100-meter relay as Farquharson, Ruth, Hurrington and Gillon clocked a time of 46.06. Deckert, Pontecorvo, Krausser and freshman Christina Dibernardo (Woodbury, N.Y.) gave Rutgers event win in the 4x800 with the group running a time of 9:19.40. In the 4x400-meter relay, Hurrington, Gillon, Farquharson and Ruth placed second with a time of 3:47.24.
Rutgers posted a pair of second-place showings to lead performances in the field events. Ruth was second in the long jump with a leap of 20’ 10.5” (6.36m), followed by Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) who placed third with a mark of 19’9”. Okobi was second in the triple jump with a leap of 40’1.25” (12.22m).
Sophomores Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) and Emily Vargas (Clark, N.J.) tied for third in the high jump with both clearing the bar at 5’5” (1.65m). Bradley also placed third in the heptathlon with 4,044 points (Bradley won the heptathlon high jump), while Vargas competed in long and triple jump. Vargas took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 19’.5” (5.80m) and was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 38’2.75” (11.65m).
Rounding out the performances in the field events were Colleen McDowell (Tabernacle, N.J.) and Elaina Mezzasalma (Marlboro, N.J.). McDowell was fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 10’8” (3.25m) and Mezzasalma placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 118’2” (36.02m).
Rutgers will return to action on Friday, April 20 for the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
