TAMPA, Fla. (March 19, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s track and field team kicked off its 2012 outdoor season, competing at the Bulls Invitational on the campus of USF on Friday, March 16 at USF Track and Field Stadium.
Sophomore Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights as she won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.65, highlighting a 1-2 finish for RU with junior Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) taking second in 11.73. Gillon also placed third in the 200-meter, clocking a time of 24.43, while Ruth finished sixth in 24.71.
Sophomore Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) placed third in the 1,500-meter, running a time of 4:33.10 (BIG EAST qualifier). Also posting conference qualifying times on the track were senior Danai Lendor (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and sophomore Victoria Clark (Camden, N.J.) in the 400-meter hurdles. Lendor clocked a time of 1:03.09 to finish seventh, followed by Clark in eight with a time of 1:03.39. Sophomore Brianna Deming (Webster, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:33.17.
Senior Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) was the top performer in the field events for the Scarlet Knights as she placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 40’5” (12.32m) and took fourth in the long jump (third among collegiates) with a mark of 18’9.75” (5.73m).
