BRONX, N.Y. (January 28, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s track and field team collected 120.5 points to finish third at the 2012 Metropolitan Indoor Championships on Friday, Jan. 28 at the Armory Track and Field Center in Bronx, N.Y.
Several Scarlet Knights turned in standout performances at the Metropolitan Championships, including nine top-three finishes. Brianna Deming (Webster, N.Y.) finished runner-up in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:20.07.
Tylia Gillon (New Egypt, N.J.) finished third in the 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 7.60. Gillon also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.92, while Asha Ruth (Bowie, Md.) placed second in the event, running a time of 24.60. Also earning points in the sprints was Megan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.), who finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.99.
Victoria Pontecorvo (Staten Island, N.Y.) took third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:57.39.
In the one-mile run, Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) and Jennifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) finished second and fifth, respectively. Deckert ran a time of 4:53.32, followed by Spitzer in 5:00.68. Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J.) placed fifth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:15.59.
Rutgers scored points in the relays with two groups turning in second-place finishes, including Gillon, Ruth, Corryn Hurrington (Bowie, Md.) and Gabrielle Farquharson (Williamstown, N.J.) who clocked a time of 3:49.20 in the 4x400-meter relay. Deckert, Pontecorvo and Spitzer joined Allison Payenski () in the 4x800-meter relay as the group ran a time of 9:17.68 to finish second.
In the field events, Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) earned top-three finishes in a pair of events as she placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.32 meters and third in the long jump with a leap of 5.89 meters. Ruth finished fourth in the long jump (5.72 meters), while Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) was fourth in the triple jump (11.34 meters).
Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) and Emily Vargas (Clark, N.J.) went fourth and fifth, respectively in the pentathlon. Bradley collected 3,187 points, followed by Vargas with 2,992 points. Colleen McDowell (Tabernacle, N.J.) finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.30 meters.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Feb. 3 for the New Balance Invitational at the Armory.
