PRINCETON, N.J. (January 15, 2012) – Rutgers senior Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) won a pair of events, including posting a school record as women’s track and field competed against St. Johns’, Saint Joseph’s and host Princeton in a quad meet on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Jadwin Gym.
The Scarlet Knights placed third with 108 points, behind second-place St. John’s (119) and meet winner Princeton (195). Saint Joseph’s was fourth with 100 points.
"We had some good performances in a number of events today,” said head coach James Robinson. “We're improving our performances across the board each week and obtaining more BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying marks. The next three competitions will help our student-athletes become sharper as the championship season rolls around."
Okobi broke her previous school record in the triple jump which she set last month at the Princeton New Year’s Invitational on Dec. 10. She won the triple jump Saturday with a mark of 41’1” (12.51 meters), both a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying distance. Okobi also took home a victory in the long jump, recording a leap of 19’2.5” (5.85 meters), another BIG EAST and ECAC qualifier.
Joining Okobi with event victories was sophomore Kristen Bradley (Medford, N.J.) and freshman Meagan Robinson (Burlington, N.J.). Bradley won the high jump, clearing a height of 5’5” (1.65 meters), while Robinson claimed top honors in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 9.09.
Also turning in strong performances for the Scarlet Knights was junior Ekene Ugboaja (Edison, N.J.) who placed third in the triple jump with a BIG EAST qualifier of 38’10.75’ (11.85 meters). Junior Jennifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) and sophomore Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) each posted fifth-place times in their respective events. Spitzer ran a time of 5:05.68 (BE qualifier) in the mile, while Deckert clocked a 2:57.30 (BE qualifier) in the 1,000-meter.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 for the Great Dane Classic at the NY Armory in Bronx, N.Y.
